Introduction to GTAW / TIG Plate Course Curriculum: 

Course Description: The Introduction to GTAW / TIG Plate course is designed to teach students about arc welding safety and the GTAW welding process, proper techniques and electrodes selection for welding GTAW in various weld positions such as 2G, 3G, and 4G to meet ASME welding code. 

Subject Hours: 120 clock hour's (20 hours, 100 hours lab, 00 hours ext) 

Performance Objectives:

  • 1. GTAW Process works
  • 2. Fitting of plate joints
  • 3. Running basic weld beads
  • 4. Welding with Er-70S-6 electrodes.
  • 5. Identify and troubleshoot welding issues.
  • 6. Proper cleaning techniques after each pass weld.
  • 7. Cut using oxy-fuel torch. 

Prerequisites: Admission to the program 

Required Textbooks:  Pearson. NCCER Welding Level 2 Trainee Guide, 5th Edition, 2015

Weekly Content Outline:

  • Week 1. Safety procedures, lab guidelines, & overview of the GTAW process.
  • Week 2. Intro to fitting, prepping and cleaning materials, proper grinding techniques & running a basic weld bead.
  • Week 3. Running beads, proper cleaning techniques on welds, cutting using oxy-fuel torch, identify & troubleshoot any issues that may arise while welding.
  • Week 4. Welding plate in the horizontal position (2G).
  • Week 5. Welding plate in the vertical position (3G).
  • Week 6. Welding plate in the overhead position (4G). 

 Basis of Grades: Tests / Quizzes: 15%, Lab Assignments: 50%, Final Exam: 35%
